JordanA Day in the Life of an Internet Marketing Intern

These days, 22-year-old Jordan Justice leaves her house before 8 am and drives for an hour, from Cullowhee to West Asheville in morning rush hour traffic, to arrive on time for her internship at JB Media Group. Along the way she grabs an iced coffee—fuel for a full day that starts with interning for the JB Media Group agency, assisting the team with client research, and then switching, mid-day, into student mode at the JB Media Institute, where she takes a seat alongside other students, entrepreneurs mostly, who are ready to launch their businesses or reinvigorate their marketing plans and are eager to learn how to do it.

It’s this kind of learning—hands on and instructive—that makes the two-hour daily commute worth it. Still, it takes a special level of dedication to show up, be on time, and be ready for anything, characteristics that we think not only make Jordan a fabulous person, but a truly helpful intern.

Jordan Justice on Career Dreams, Company Culture, and Panthers Football

Awesome name! You sound like the heroine of a cool TV series.

Ha! People usually say that I should be a lawyer because of my last name, but, personally, I think a TV series would be much cooler.

So, where are you from?

I’m originally from Topsail Island, NC, but I grew up in the Raleigh Area.

What school do you attend and what are you studying?

I’m in my last semester of college at Western Carolina University preparing to graduate with a Bachelor’s in Communications, holding a concentration in Public Relations, and a minor in Marketing.

Nice! How did you find out about JB Media Group?

I actually came across some articles online referencing JB Media and after looking at the website, I thought it would be a really cool place to do my internship. I sent an email via the contact form with my information and what I was looking for, and Adrianne Gordon, the Director of Operations emailed me back a few days later asking for my resume and cover letter. I was originally looking for an internship for the summer of 2015 but ended up pushing back my internship a semester so I could work here!

We’re glad you did! So what is your internship role here at JB Media Group?

I am a marketing intern, working closely with Adrianne, concerning general marketing assignments, and also with Genna, Institute Community Manager for the JB Media Institute.

What, in your opinion, has been the most interesting thing you’ve learned so far in your internship?

I’m beginning to dig into SEO more than I ever have before and I’m really excited to continue to expand my knowledge as I go through the JB Media Institute.

What do you think about the JB Media team culture? Is it what you’d imagined an Internet Marketing company to be like?

I was surprised to realize how comfortable the office is at JB Media Group. The atmosphere is very easy going and it is a great environment to work in. Everyone that I’ve met on the team has been very friendly and made my transition from the classroom to the office much less intimidating than I led myself to believe.

What’s your dream job?

I’d love to manage social media accounts for a large company, or work for an agency and be able to manage multiple clients at once. I love the quickly changing world of social media and learning about new platforms as they arise!

You sound like a quick study. What’s next for you after JB Media Group?

I have hopes of moving to Charlotte, NC, and beginning my career in the “Queen City.” I’ve always loved the atmosphere of Charlotte and I feel like there are a lot of opportunities for me to grow, both as a young professional and as an individual.

What’s one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?

People don’t usually pin me for a football fan, but every football Sunday you’ll find me posted in front of a Carolina Panthers game cheering on my favorite team. Yes, I know they can’t hear me, but I’ll yell at the TV anyway!

Are there any people you want to acknowledge or thank?

I’d like to give thanks to my parents for their constant support throughout my five years of college and my in-major advisor for helping me realize I can do anything I put my mind to. I’d also like to give a special thanks to Justin, Adrianne, and everyone else at JB Media for taking the time to teach me new things and help prepare me for my career outside of college!
